For the past two years, our volunteer nurse, Miss Magalie, has been sacrificing her time to faithfully serve the 113 children in our Village Partnership Program (VPP). Miss Magalie treats minor illnesses and injuries as needed, and refers more complex cases to a local partnering doctor. She also teaches a weekly health lesson to the children as part of the afterschool curriculum.

The children of Bellevue lack quality education. Though private schools exist, many parents cannot afford the fees and tuition to send their children to schools. Even when they can, private schools in Haiti have no government regulation or standards, often of very poor quality with unqualified teachers, high student to teacher ratios, and poor results. Most preschools have limited resources and teaching styles which are not well adapted to this age.

Many children in Haiti go home to families who cannot provide regular meals, clothing, and hygiene supplies. There are 20 children in our program who live with elderly or sick relatives who cannot work at all. These children are the most vulnerable to human trafficking, domestic servitude, or being given up to an orphanage just so they can survive.

Haiti is in a crisis that far precedes the coronavirus pandemic. Political unrest in 2019 brought a three-month lockdown, violent protests, road blockades, school closures, and the rising of food prices.

Haiti’s economy is reeling, and the recent pandemic has only made food and supplies even more expensive. If Children of the Nations is going to continue to provide holistic care to the children in our programs, we need to adjust to the inflated prices.

“If COTN hadn’t taken me from that hospital, I wouldn’t be able to stand in front of you today.”

20-year-old Steven means this quite literally – he is thinking back to the day when he couldn’t stand or walk – the day he lost everything.
