A boys' dorm is badly needed at COTN's secondary school in Uganda. Currently, several dozen boys are crowded into a small house next to the campus (photo below), while others are staying in one of our Children's Homes.

With the addition of the secondary school, the water usage at COTN-Uganda has increased drastically and we need to begin exploring ways to use the rain water that falls during rainy season.

COTN-Uganda has seen the opportunity to add gutters and a water tank to collect rain water from the roof of the girls' dormitory. The water will run off of the roof into the gutters attached to the building. It will then be piped to a water tank (which will hold 30,000 liters or 7,925 gallons) that will be equipped with a tap for students and staff to come and use. 

We have seen a big problem in overcrowding at our school bathrooms. For a variety of reasons, this is not a good thing. We are especially concerned about the privacy of our older girls. Right now there is little space to distinguish between the boys' toilets and the girls' toilets.

COTN-Uganda has made some adjustments internally to help the situation, but it is not enough to alleviate the number of people that use the toilets. Adding a urinal separate for the boys will help us in this area.

The goal of the project is to have fire extinguishers in all areas deemed necessary by the Ugandan Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Gender.

Our primary school has developed greatly in the last few years. To continue to grow and improve the education of our children, COTN Nursery and Primary School would like to begin a school band.  

Research has shown that people who are involved in music education see an increase in their academic performance. Our children in Uganda are very involved in singing and dancing, but have had limited opportunities to learn band instruments. We would like to change that in the near future.  

Since 2013, our primary 7 students have embarked on a 3-day field trip (called a “study tour”) to visit areas of Uganda many of our children have not yet reached. We are praying that 2019 will be no different.

To enhance the learning done in school, the teaching staff would like to take students to Jinja, Kampala, and Entebbe for a field trip. 

In Jinja, the students are able to see and learn about the River Nile and see the actual point where the Nile River begins. 

With rapid growth at our school in Uganda, we are quickly realizing the need for many small projects to ensure quality education and health for our students. This is one of those projects.

We are blessed at COTN's nursery and primary school to have purchased many textbooks for our pupils. While we have done our best to keep them well, it has been difficult to do so as we don’t have a proper place to keep them.

In addition, our primary teachers have begun to see the benefit of reading aloud to children often. The library would be a wonderful place to take the children and read stories to them and let them explore reading story books on their own.
