The Sierra Leone Vehicles Project aims to acquire two Toyota Land Cruiser 76 Station Wagons (HZJ 76) to address the critical transportation challenges faced by Children of the Nations-Sierra Leone (COTN-SL). Each Land Cruiser costs $64,015.
Located in the remote and rugged Moyamba District, COTN-SL struggles with poor road conditions, high vehicle maintenance costs, and expensive vehicle rentals. This project will provide reliable, safe, and cost-effective transportation to support administrative operations, staff mobility, and the delivery of essential services to children and communities.
Reliable Transportation: Ensure consistent and safe mobility for staff, children, and supplies across challenging terrain.
Cost Efficiency: Reduce the high costs of vehicle rentals and frequent repairs by investing in durable, long-lasting vehicles.
Operational Support: Enhance the efficiency of COTN-SL’s programs by enabling timely access to resources, services, and remote locations.
Direct Beneficiaries:
COTN-SL Staff: Safe and reliable transportation for administrative operations and program delivery.
Children in COTN-SL Programs: Improved access to education, healthcare, and other essential services.
Indirect Beneficiaries:
Families and Communities: Enhanced well-being as COTN-SL’s programs operate more effectively.
Local Economy: Reduced reliance on expensive vehicle rentals, freeing up resources for other critical needs.
Challenging Terrain: The remote location of COTN-SL’s operational site, combined with poor road conditions, makes transportation difficult and costly.
High Costs: Frequent vehicle breakdowns and rentals cost the organization approximately $250 per day, straining the budget.
Safety and Efficiency: Current vehicles are unreliable, posing safety risks and hindering program operations.
Indicators of Success:
Two new Toyota Land Cruisers operational and in use.
Reduced vehicle rental costs by 80%.
Improved staff mobility and program delivery efficiency.
The project focuses on acquiring two durable Toyota Land Cruisers, specifically designed for rugged terrain, to replace the aging and unreliable fleet. This approach directly addresses the immediate need for reliable transportation while reducing long-term costs.
The project supports:
COTN-SL’s Operational Efficiency: Ensuring staff and resources can reach remote locations safely and on time.
Cost Reduction: Minimizing expenses related to vehicle rentals and maintenance.
Program Impact: Enhancing the delivery of education, healthcare, and other services to children and communities.
Maintenance Plan: Regular monthly checkups and maintenance contracts with qualified institutions to ensure vehicle longevity.
Redundant Vehicles: Older vehicles will be repurposed for short-distance operations, maximizing their practical value.
Long-Term Use: The new vehicles are expected to have a useful lifespan of five years, with replacements planned based on roadworthiness.
