Marathon Event to Package Over 100,000 Meals

Silverdale, WA – April 30, 2010 – Upwards of 1,200 local volunteers will gather on May 22, to package food for orphaned and destitute children through Children of the Nations (COTN), a local non-profit organization. COTN will be hosting the annual “Silverdale Meal Marathon” on Saturday, May 22, at Silverdale United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

At this event, upwards of 1,200 volunteers are expected to come together to package food that meets the daily nutritional needs of the children COTN currently serves in Sierra Leone, West Africa. At each table, bags of food will be filled with four ingredients: lentils, dried vegetables, fortified bouillon chicken powder and rice. The bags are then weighed, sealed, and boxed for shipment overseas. COTN’s goal is to package over 100,000 meals by the end of the day!

“Our Meal Marathons put conviction into action,” says Dave Spoon, COTN’s Washington State Feeding Coordinator. “Knowing that a child dies from hunger-related causes every five seconds in the world is overwhelming, to say the least, and people generally don’t know how they can help. Our Meal Marathons are a hands-on, fun, and practical way for the entire community to help address this problem."

With COTN’s 15-year history of working in Africa and the Dominican Republic, members of our own community can be sure that their efforts are going directly to [help] the children who need it most. Spoon explains, “At COTN, we are addressing the enormous problems of orphaned children and world hunger every day, but we need the support of our local community to continue this daunting fight.”

Community members interested in participating in the food-packaging event or donating to the cause should visit /meal-marathons for more information on how to sign up.

    About Children of the Nations

Children of the Nations (COTN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising children who transform nations. Founded in 1995, the organization currently provides holistic care to orphaned and destitute children in Sierra Leone, Malawi, Uganda, and the Dominican Republic. By partnering with nationals, they establish full-care residential Children’s Homes (for orphans) and Village Partnership Programs (to benefit children living with destitute families or caregivers who are unable to properly provide for them). The programs and services they provide include education, feeding centers, medical services, and community development initiatives such as agriculture, sanitation projects, micro-enterprise, and much more. Children of the Nations believes that true, lasting, and meaningful change begins with the children, and so they are their mission. Children of the Nations stands apart from other organizations in their goal, not to provide relief, but rather to come alongside nationals, empowering them to a life of self-sustainability.
