Dental Team from Independent Bible Church Serves in Sierra Leone

Port Angeles, WA – January 25, 2009 – A short-term mission team from Independent Bible Church in Port Angeles, Washington recently returned from Sierra Leone in West Africa. Serving with the non-profit organization, Children of the Nations (COTN), the three-person dental team led by Dr. Vern Swenson served in the remote community of Banta Mokelleh, approximately eight hours from the capital of Freetown. The severely underdeveloped community has very limited access to medical care, and dental facilities are almost non-existent. During the two-week trip, Dr. Swenson conducted over 400 dental exams and 80 surgical procedures, and extracting over 100 diseased teeth. He was assisted and accompanied by Jennie and Dennis Dalman. Dennis also served as an agriculture and construction mentor to the organization’s Sierra Leone staff.
“God answered prayer by taking away the fears of the kids so we could do successful dentistry,” said Dr. Swenson. “Also, we were able to train the local COTN staff, Nurse Agnes and Nurse Charles, to do tooth extractions. We left behind a full dental surgical kit and anesthetic supplies that they can now use to treat the children!”

    About Children of the Nations
Children of the Nations (COTN) is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising children who transform nations. Founded in 1995, the organization currently provides holistic care to orphaned and destitute children in Sierra Leone, Malawi, Uganda, and the Dominican Republic. By partnering with nationals, they establish full-care residential Children’s Homes (for orphans) and Village Partnership Programs (to benefit children living with destitute families or caregivers who are unable to properly provide for them). The programs and services they provide include education, feeding centers, medical services, and community development initiatives such as agriculture, sanitation projects, micro-enterprise, and much more. Children of the Nations believes that true, lasting, and meaningful change begins with the children, and so they are their mission. Children of the Nations stands apart from other organizations in their goal, not to provide relief, but rather to come alongside nationals, empowering them to a life of self-sustainability.
