Local Nonprofit Children of the Nations Provides Food in Drought-Stricken Parts of Africa

SILVERDALE, WA – February 24, 2016 – This past fall it was clear a food crisis was on the horizon for Malawi. Children of the Nations (COTN) along with its partners, has been preparing for last week’s inevitable announcement: six countries in southern Africa have declared a national state of disaster due to a severe drought that has caused widespread food shortages.

UNICEF reported that Malawi is facing the worst food crisis in nine years. The problem began last year during widespread flooding followed by a severe drought caused by El Nino. An estimated 2.8 million people are at risk of hunger. The majority of those people live in rural areas and rely almost exclusively on farming. Compounding this crisis, the value of Malawi’s currency has dropped causing sharp inflation of food prices, up to 200% on maize, a staple in the Malawian diet.

“We can tell you that children are dying,” says Cheryl Cuthbertson, COTN’s director of sustainable practices. She visited Malawi in January. “Mothers are literally bringing babies to us for help,” she says.

Since October, COTN and its partners, including Food for Kidz, Kids Around the World, and Feeding Children Everywhere, have delivered and distributed 622,000 meals to Malawi. For nursing mothers and their babies who are suffering from malnutrition, COTN has been providing bottles and formula. Soon nurses will be sent into communities to conduct a screening and response program to identify and treat malnourishment.

Because climate change is continuing to negatively impact agriculture in Malawi, COTN is also working to build a sustainable future. COTN is investing in farms, which feed the children COTN serves, by diversifying with drought tolerant crops as well as raising pigs, chickens, and cows.

For anyone interested in providing immediate relief to children and investing in a sustainable future, COTN has set up a fund called Feeding Children Today, Tomorrow, Forever which can be found at cotni.org/feeding.
