Blessing Kids in Malawi—from California! United States

In April 2007, Melissa Mohr of San Clemente, California went on a mission trip to Malawi and returned with a changed perspective about the needs of children in Africa. After finding an article about COTN in her sister’s Bible, Melissa was compelled to get involved. She was especially drawn to COTN because of its ministry to children in Malawi.

A letter that accompanied a recent donation from an 11-year-old girl from Corte Madera, California…

Dear Children of the Nations,

Thank you so much for providing people with food, schools, and farms and so on. I collected $265 for my birthday instead of gifts. If it is possible, could you please send it to Sierra Leone, Malawi, and Uganda? I want to try and do more things to get more money to donate.

News from our Children in Uganda Uganda

We recently received an update on our twenty-six children in Uganda. Last fall we opened our first children’s home in Lira, Uganda and welcomed twenty-six orphans into our full-time care. Last month was characterized by many successes, though we’ve received reports of a few challenges as well.

A Farewell to Long-time Staff Member United States

Doug Hanson, Senior Director of our Venture and Feeding Programs, announced last month that he would be leaving COTN to start a new season in his family’s life. Last month, at a bittersweet celebration we bid farewell to Doug. Over the last seven years, Doug has overseen and developed COTN’s Venture Program (short-term missions) and Feeding Programs.

Our Silverdale, WA 285K Meal Marathon was a Huge Success! United States

Despite the challenge of finding rice to package meals for hungry children, the 285K Meal Marathon held in Silverdale, Washington on Friday, May 16 was a success! Volunteers eagerly packaged 285,000 meals at the 10-hour event benefiting children in Africa and the Dominican Republic.

Peace Talks Unsuccessful—Ugandan Rebels Prepare for War Uganda

Uganda’s rebel leader, Joseph Kony, is reportedly preparing a new offensive after refusing to sign a peace deal. Diplomats say his Lord’s Resistance Army is forcibly recruiting fresh fighters and acquiring new arms in neighboring countries.

A Day Volunteering at Children of the Nations United States

Last month, students from Carden Country School from Bainbridge Island, Washington blessed COTN with their gift of service. “Future journalists” Madeleine Bentley, Anna Misenti, and Rebecca Gallivan reported on the day’s activites:

On Wednesday, April 30 twenty of Carden Country School’s upper grade students left their school ready to work. After a long car ride, they arrived at Children of the Nations headquarters in Silverdale, Washington. They are currently caring for children in Malawi, Uganda, Sierra Leone and the Dominican Republic.

The shipment of donations has departed from Silverdale, WA and Long Beach, CA for Sierra Leone!

Thousands of donations have been loaded by hearty volunteers into shipping containers and will arrive July 1st in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
