1. Sit down.
Whether it’s a scheduling conflict or writer’s block, sometimes the hardest part of writing to your sponsored child is just sitting down to do it! Don’t let time hold you back. Grab a sheet of paper, a pen, and sit down for 10 minutes. And if you can’t figure out what to write, keep reading.

2. Pray before your pen hits the paper.
Invite God into this process. Your letters really do make a wonderful impact on your sponsored child. Your letter is a tangible expression of love, encouragement, and hope. God is more than happy to help you write your letter!

3. Tell your sponsored child about yourself.
  • Describe your hometown. No it’s not lame; your child wants to learn about where you live.
  • Tell your child about what you do for a living
  • Tell your child about your family and/or pets
  • Describe an upcoming holiday tradition

4. Make it a family affair.
Let each member of your family contribute to the letter or write their own!

5. Encourage your child.
Your supportive words may be the only ones they hear in a given month. Use phrases like:
  • We’re proud of you.
  • We’re praying for you.
  • God has a wonderful plan for your life.
  • We love you.

6. Add a Bible verse.
Choose a verse that will encourage your child. Let your child know you are praying for them.

Tell me about your church
Tell me about where you live
Tell me about a prayer God answered for you
How you can I pray for you?

8. Add a photo.
Your child loves to see pictures of you and your family!

9. Include your child’s sponsorship number.
You can find your child’s number in your account on cotni.org or on past correspondence from your child. Prepare an inner envelope and write your child’s name and reference number on the center of the envelope and your first and last name in the upper left corner.

10. Stamp it and mail it!
Address an outer envelope to COTN, P.O. Box 3970, Silverdale WA 98383. Stick a stamp on it and put it in the mailbox.
