Why Your Child Is Not Smiling

03/17/14

You know the feeling. You finally get an update from your sponsored child. You feel that there's a photo inside—so you rush to open it. Only to find that your child looks miserable. No smile. Again.

It can be disappointing to get a photo of your child looking upset
It can be frustrating and disappointing to get a photo of your child looking upset. But there's more to that photo than meets the eye.

Why doesn't my child ever smile in their sponsorship photo? This is a question our sponsorship department gets very frequently. Maybe imagining the scene will help you understand a little better.

It's sponsorship photo day, and your child's whole class is lined up outside. It's hot, and she is toward the back of the line. She's tired, and a little nervous—she only gets her picture taken once a year, so this is a big deal for her.

Your child might have to wait in line for a while before her photo is taken
Your child might have to wait in line for a while before her photo is taken. She may be tired, annoyed, or have her mind on other things at the moment the shutter snaps.

It's finally her turn, and she's pretty exhausted by now. She still has the energy to smile as she plays with her friends, but as she gets up in front of the camera, her face goes completely blank. Maybe it's because she's nervous for her picture. Maybe it's because her parents taught her to look serious when her picture is taken (in many of the countries we serve, photo time is seen as a very serious occasion, and one you look very serious for).

Whatever the reason, her photo comes out without a smile, again. As a sponsor, it is frustrating to see your child year after year with no smile. But remember that behind that face, there is more transformation going on than you could ever see in an expression. And that's what's most important.
