A Resolution to Live Simply, Give Generously

Dave and Jean Kaiser bought their home with the intention of remodeling it. But when they walked back through the doorway after a two-week trip to Uganda, everything changed.

"There was something about walking into this big house with air conditioning," Jean says.

"There we were in Uganda with [COTN staff member] Jimmey and he's talking about supporting eighteen people in his tiny house," Jean recalls. "And we have a huge house for just the two of us!"

Jean's perspective on her home changed when she met these children in Uganda.

But it wasn't just the heartache of seeing people who do not have enough in Uganda that inspired Jean and Dave to change their lifestyle. "It was how much we fell in love with the children and the mission and the organization itself," says Jean. "We started asking ourselves how we could get more involved."

The answer became clear when they returned to their house in San Diego. They had bought the house a few years earlier as a fixer-upper. "Everything works, it's just kinda ugly," Jean explains.

So they decided that ugly would do. "We have so much. We kept asking, what do we really need?" Jean explains. Over the next few weeks, the Kaisers cut their remodel budget by sixty percent. They started sponsoring three children and making an additional monthly donation. "We are giving five times more than before," says Jean.

The Kaisers know they have made sacrifices. "We had to let go of our dreams and what is 'best' from a financial investment standpoint," Jean says. But the blessing has been more than worth it. "We're excited to make these sacrifices because we get to give," Jean explains. "Just knowing that we get to have an impact on these kids' lives is amazing."
