Our Silverdale, WA 285K Meal Marathon was a Huge Success!

Despite the challenge of finding rice to package meals for hungry children, the 285K Meal Marathon held in Silverdale, Washington on Friday, May 16 was a success! Volunteers eagerly packaged 285,000 meals at the 10-hour event benefiting children in Africa and the Dominican Republic.

Children of the Nations staff members were concerned that the 285K would have to be canceled when we were told we could not buy a shipment of rice from our normal source. This was due to the increased demand for rice globally and the fact that some major rice-producing countries were not exporting. This dilemma initially prevented the purchase of rice needed for the event. “But God’s plan is perfect! Our supplier, at the last minute, had a major buyer release a truckload for us to buy, even though the cost was almost twice as much as normal,” says Dave Spoon, Washington Feeding Coordinator. “We saw how God used the situation to His glory—gaining exposure to our ministry and rallying the community to support COTN, many who had never heard of COTN before.” Pound after pound of rice was brought in by the community—over 10,000 lbs. in all.

The meals packaged are a combination of rice, lentils, chicken powder, and spices. When the rice and lentils are combined, they make a complete protein—an important element of a healthy meal. In addition to being a healthy meal, the children enjoy eating it. “The children in our countries love this meal. The countries can add their own ingredients, like different spices, meat, beans, and vegetables,” said Samantha McCabe, COTN/Ready Relief intern.

The community’s outpouring of support truly made the event a success. Generous corporate sponsors, such as Silverdale Macy’s Furniture, provided financial donations and volunteers to assemble the meals. AmeriCorps members helped to set up tables, bring in ingredients prior to the event, and also packaged food.

Many volunteers stayed beyond their two-hour shifts to ensure the goal of packaging 285,000 meals was reached. Over $10,000 was collected at the event to help cover the costs of ingredients and shipping.

Thank you to our corporate sponsors and volunteers for helping hungry children receive a nutritious meal! A special thanks to:
