Blessing Kids in Malawi—from California!

In April 2007, Melissa Mohr of San Clemente, California went on a mission trip to Malawi and returned with a changed perspective about the needs of children in Africa. After finding an article about COTN in her sister’s Bible, Melissa was compelled to get involved. She was especially drawn to COTN because of its ministry to children in Malawi.

Melissa decided to collect SmilePacks for COTN for her high school senior project. SmilePacks are a practical opportunity for anyone who wants to be involved in helping orphaned and destitute children— from anywhere! Individuals and groups assemble hygiene items, school supplies, gifts, and other items that provide for children’s basic life needs, encouragement, and spiritual growth. COTN sends these items to children in Africa and the Dominican Republic.

Melissa was excited to find a mission opportunity that she could participate in— right from her home in California— that would help orphaned and destitute children in Malawi.

“It breaks my heart that so many children in our world live in such destitute conditions.
I believe that providing these care packages give children back their dignity. These are items that are so inexpensive yet they are vital for everyday life,” Melissa said.

Stepping out in faith, Melissa spoke to women’s Bible studies, a local Rotary club, classes at her school, and youth groups at her church to request donations. “I got to witness the power of God and how he uses even the most unlikely people. A huge fear of mine is speaking in public, and even though I was afraid, God gave me confidence and held my hand through the entire process— all glory goes to Him!” she said.

Sara Booth, COTN–Orange County Satellite Director, recently celebrated with Melissa when she presented 264 SmilePacks at the conclusion of her project! The Hygiene and School Packs donated will be given to children in Malawi and other countries as needed.
