Containers of Hope Arrive in Sierra Leone! Sierra Leone

Our children in Sierra Leone were blessed to receive over 15,000 pounds of donated supplies this month! All of the items were provided and shipped by Containers of Hope, a nonprofit organization based in La Habra Heights, California.

The shipment included 660 Love Packs—backpacks stuffed with school supplies, hygiene products, toys, and books. Our children were also happy to receive footballs, toys, boxes of tissues, scarves, jackets, sweatshirts, and even bottled water!

Julius “Pastor” Amara arrived at Children of the Nations' (COTN’s) Banta malnutrition clinic last summer in the dreadful condition of protein deficiency. After two weeks of care and a high protein diet, little Julius started to come back to life.

Dental Team Visits Sierra Leone Sierra Leone

A Venture Team of three people from Independent Bible Church in Port Angeles, Washington traveled to Banta Mokelleh, Sierra Leone from January 9 – 20. The team focused on ministering to our children and the community through dentistry.

Dr. Vern Swenson led the team, conducting over 400 dental exams and 80 surgical procedures, and extracting over 100 diseased teeth. He was assisted and accompanied by Jennie and Dennis Dalman. Dennis served as an agriculture and construction mentor with our Sierra Leone staff.

Waiting for Letters Sierra Leone

Hand-delivered letters. They are an extremely rare thing in the age of overnight delivery and email. But in Banta Mokelleh, Sierra Leone, no postal service can deliver packages and letters. Our children there look forward to visiting Venture Teams, knowing they will often bring a simple treasure—a hand-delivered letter from their sponsor.

A Bounce House for Banta Sierra Leone

Last year, Ray McGaughey of Space Walk Rentals in Orlando, Florida donated two inflatable “bounce houses” to COTN to ship to Sierra Leone to use at evangelical events and in conjunction with outdoor screenings of the JESUS film. Last fall, our COTN–SL staff was excited to surprise our children with it over the Christmas holiday.

The Banana Tree Project Sierra Leone

Elijah Ville, one of our Liberian interns in Sierra Leone, is overseeing a new project on our farm—a banana tree plantation. COTN is beginning this project with 500 banana plants “suckers.” Suckers are secondary shoots that give rise to new plants.

Five years ago, Burley Christian School in Burley, Washington became part of the Children of the Nations family when they began sponsoring Michael Roberts, a young orphan in Sierra Leone. After several years of sponsorship, school leaders decided to work with the students to create a special project for Michael.

Over the course of the school year, they assembled a giant care package for Michael and his “brothers and sisters” in the Banta Mokelleh orphanage. It was a labor of love that involved the entire school—students in preschool through twelfth grade.

Four Containers Arrive in Sierra Leone! Sierra Leone

Four containers full of food and supplies that were shipped to Sierra Leone last June have safely arrived. COTN–SL Country Director Angie Myles reports that the initial shipment has already been transported to our ministry site in Banta Mokelleh. “The first shipment included what was most urgently needed—100 cartons of packaged meals, several dozen large bags of rice, 60 student chairs, 30 student desks, 200 cartons of school supplies, various medical supplies, and 100 cases of Dove shampoo. The remaining inventory will be sorted and trucked to Banta in the coming weeks.

A Summer Camp Update Sierra Leone

New friends were made, the gospel was preached, and the fun, games, and activity kept children going all day. The COTN summer camp in Sierra Leone had all the elements of an unforgettable two weeks.

Nearly 500 children gathered at the COTN site in Banta Mokelleh, Sierra Leone between July 27 and August 9 for an evangelistic summer camp.
