Give Life This Christmas: Feed a Malnourished Child

10/15/13

Imagine if, instead of unwrapping a present this Christmas, you could save a life.

The gift of feeding a malnourished child can literally mean the difference between life and death for a child.

Take Brima for example.

"He was sitting in the dirt with the saddest look in his eyes,"

"He was sitting in the dirt with the saddest look in his eyes," wrote staff member Sarah Saunier after she first met five-year-old Brima in 2006, at the Children of the Nations (COTN) Therapeutic Feeding Center in Sierra Leone. "His skin and hair had lightened—common side-effects of malnutrition. There was no hope in his eyes."

Brima's step-mother had taken him to COTN's Therapeutic Feeding Center in desperation. She didn't have enough food for him, and had watched in horror as her four-year-old son grew thinner and thinner, his hair turning orange and the light fading from his eyes. She didn't know how to help him.

Thank God for people like you who support the Therapeutic Feeding Center in Sierra Leone. There, Brima received a porridge made from local high-protein grains, beans, and nuts. The staff also taught his step-mother how to make the porridge so she could continue to care for all her children.

Through intense care, Brima slowly began to recover. Sarah says she will never forget the first time she saw a glimmer of light in his eyes. After a few days of treatment she played a flashlight game with him, and Brima laughed for the first time.

Brima wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for people like you who give gifts through COTN's Christmas Gift Catalog. Thanks to the care he received, today Brima is healthy and attending COTN's school in fourth grade! What a miracle—all thanks to people like you!

Today, Brima is healthy and in fourth grade at COTN's school.
