Two Thousand Happy Feet in Malawi

Why are these children showing off their shoes?

They just received a brand new pair of flip-flops from some COTN partners in California.

That might not sound like a big deal until you realize that shoes are a luxury for children in rural Malawi. Most children walk, work, and play with their feet uncovered and exposed to parasites and sharp objects. Even if they have shoes for school—which all sponsored children receive through COTN—they will save them for school, and go barefoot to work and play. Flip-flops give them safe, casual shoes to change into after classes.

COTN partners Don and Ranie Hunter came up with the idea of sending flip-flops from California to Malawi after visiting Malawi in 2013. Thanks to them and the congregation of New Hope Church in Chula Vista, more than 1,000 children in Malawi will now be protected from preventible cuts, infections, and disease. The Hunters and many other generous people also helped raise money to start Community Health Clubs in the villages where these children live, so families can learn more easy ways to prevent disease and infection.

It’s not hard to see why these children have such big smiles!
