Passing on the Education: How a Former Sponsored Child Gives Back

11/04/14

Chifundo’s father died in 1997, leaving his mother to care for his family alone. Chifundo was still in primary school at the time, so his education was free. The problem was food. His mother could only do casual labor as a source of income, which didn’t earn enough to feed Chifundo and his family consistently.

Chifundo’s family struggled for three years, until he came into the Children of the Nations (COTN) child sponsorship program in his home village of Mtsiliza, Malawi. He remembers the impact that having someone to care for him in the hard times made in his life. “COTN sponsors and COTN staff have been a big help to me,” he says. Now, Chifundo has graduated with a diploma in electrical and electronics engineering from Lilongwe Technical College in Malawi, and is moving on to his second job in the field.

Chifundo’s first job was as an electrical technician at Lilongwe Dairy Limited. Now, he’s begun a new job as a meter technician at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), which involves installing and maintaining new electricity meters. “Without sponsors and Children of the Nations staff to help me, I could not have had this job I have today,” Chifundo says.

In addition to his job at ESCOM, Chifundo is able to maintain his own personal electrical workshop. Seeing the difference that his sponsors made in his life, he likes to give back to the people of his community. Now that he has the skills and the means, Chifundo is passing on what he’s learned and teaching others “good ways to achieve their goals,” he says. He’s opened his workshop to children in COTN’s programs, and regularly spends time teaching them technical skills for free.

Now, Chifundo is able to pass on the hope that was given to him by helping educate some of the children in his community.

Chifundo is thankful for the support the COTN family provides for him and other orphans in Malawi. “You help bring hope to hopeless children. May God bless you abundantly in whatever your hands work on,” he says.
