Bible Studies Raise Up Leaders

04/01/14

School just got out at the International Christian Academy, the Children of the Nations (COTN) secondary school in Malawi. But seventy-five of the students aren't rushing to get back to their homes or dorms. They are gathered in a large classroom with their Bibles by their sides, ready to hear the teaching of the day.

The students fall quiet as Grace makes her way to the front. Not normally one to stand up and speak in front of a crowd, Grace says that before she joined the after-school Bible study, she was embarrassed to tell other students she was a Christian.

Grace says Bible studies at COTN's school have completely changed her life
Grace says Bible studies at COTN's school have completely changed her life by helping her become bold and unashamed of her faith.

"But this Bible study has made a great change in my life," Grace says. "I am now able to preach to others, I am not ashamed to participate in spiritual activities." Today, Grace speaks softly but boldly as she leads the short devotion that starts off the session.

Twice a week, this large group of young students gathers for worship, teaching, and small group Bible studies, run by a Malawian interdenominational organization called the Student Christian Organization of Malawi (SCOM). These students are also expected to be leaders in their classrooms, and in the surrounding villages. Many of the sponsored children who participate in the Bible studies and leadership training then go out and help with discipleship and outreach in the villages COTN serves.

This after-school club is just one of many ways students at the school are encouraged to grow in their faith—and to step up and lead others. The leadership training is something Grace has found particularly valuable. "SCOM has really helped me develop as a leader," she says proudly.

As you support and pray for the leaders of tomorrow, know that they are already stepping up into leadership roles, influencing their peers and even entire villages. Transformation starts now—because of you!
