How Sponsorship Made Me Beautiful: Christina's Story

03/21/14

No one thought Christina would be chosen. Only three representatives from the entire primary school were going to the reading competition, and eleven-year-old Christina was in the remedial class.

Little did anyone know how seriously Christina had been taking her special after-school lessons, offered by Children of the Nations (COTN) staff members to supplement her education at the government school in her village in Malawi. She had been carefully practicing everything her COTN tutors taught her, and over the past year she had become an exceptional reader.

So when three students were chosen to compete in the regional reading competition, Christina was one of them.

Not only did she amaze everyone with her improved reading, Christina and her two friends won the competition. They came back to their school laden with their winnings: a trophy, new netballs and soccer balls, and chalk for the school.

Today, Christina smiles proudly and confidently and says, "I love to read. I have very good reading skills."

Christina attributes her success in school not only to the after-school classes she gets through COTN, but also to the basic resources she receives because of her sponsors. Even though primary school is free in Malawi, Christina says it was difficult for her to attend before she was in COTN's child sponsorship program, because she lacked the most basic supplies.

"My sponsors provide me with soap, shoes, and other basic support that keeps me in school," Christina explains. "Receiving soap keeps me in school because I am able to wash my school uniform and attend classes. And my parents could not afford to buy me good shoes and a school bag because they run a small business that struggles day by day."

Christina doesn't hesitate when she's asked the difference her sponsors make in her life. "I look beautiful and happy, because I am assured all my needs are met with the support they give me."
