Living Out a Dream—in Malawi!

As a little girl, I knew that my life-long dream and goal was to help many people in many different ways. Since becoming a teacher seven years ago, I have had the opportunity to help 140+ American children learn basic academic and life skills. Four years ago, I was asked to be part of a COTN Education Team that would teach in Malawi, Africa. At first, I was hesitant to answer the call. Africa??? Now I look forward to teaching there every summer!

It is amazing to think that I am only 30 years old and have already traveled to Malawi four times. Because I am a teacher and have the summers free, I have dedicated the past four summers to going and teaching in Malawi. What an AWESOME opportunity and a dream! I have been blessed to sponsor four kids that I LOVE to hang out with while in Malawi. I serve as an encouragement to Malawians because they recognize my face when returning year after year. During the summer of 2006, I can remember an elder of a village coming up to me and saying, “Sister, you bring us such hope. Thank you for coming again!” WOW! I enjoy bringing back my experiences and sharing them with the students that I teach. My students in the U.S. get excited when hearing about my adventures and want to learn more about Africa and how “my kids” live. Many of my American students work together to collect school supplies or shoes to send to children in Africa. What started out as my goal has turned into creating goals and dreams for both American and African children.

It is amazing how you go on a mission trip ready to serve, but feel like you have been blessed in return. I would have never thought that I would travel to Africa, but now Malawi has a piece of my heart. I am living out my own dream and helping children in Africa dream too!
