Jean's First Day of School

03/19/13

"The first day I felt good," Jean says with a shy smile. "But I also was missing my family," he adds.  The seven-year-old Haitian boy had never been to school before in his life.  But in January, people like you changed that. With your support, Children of the Nations (COTN) launched the first Village Partnership Program in Haiti and sent seventy-five children like Jean to school.

Now used to his daily routine at school, Jean is incredibly grateful for the opportunity you've given him—an opportunity he may have never had if it weren't for you.  In Haiti, public education is very limited, meaning that most children who cannot afford private school simply have to stay home.

"Before, I was not able to attend school because in this country, the money is not enough," says Jean. "I want to be a doctor when I grow up.  Since I will be able to go to school now, I will learn many things and be prepared for that!"

Seventy-five children like Jean got to begin school for the first time this January because of partners like you.

Though COTN is currently using child sponsorship funds to send children to a local private school, the eventual goal is to build and run a COTN school in the community of Bellevue.  This way COTN can offer Christ-centered, quality education at a much more sustainable price, and provide many more children with access to education.

"If COTN had its own school, that would be a great blessing, because I would have no worries for my complete education," says Jean.

In addition to attending regular school, Jean and the other children in the new Haiti Village Partnership Program get to attend afterschool activities.

Jean has a special message for all of you who have provided for him to attend school, as well as all of you who will help build the first COTN school in his community.  "I would like to say thank you to them," he says, "and encourage them to keep me in prayer so God can lead me in his way to be a servant for his kingdom and for my community."
