God Always Watches Over Us: Walquidea's Story

11/22/13

The bell rings and the children rush out of class to lunch. Twelve-year-old Walquidea heaps her plate high—she's not sure if she will have dinner at home tonight.

Fortunately, the food at the Children of the Nations school in her community of Don Bosco is delicious and filling, so she knows it will hold her over until the next morning. She smiles as she digs into a huge plate of rice, beans, and meat. Then she begins to chat with her friends around her.

Lunch hour at COTN's school in Don Bosco is one of Walquidea's favorite times of the day.

Walquidea used to be a scrappy kid—usually her lunchtime conversations would turn into fights. Would you blame her? She was hungry and resources were scarce, so she had to look out for herself.

But Walquidea says her behavior has changed because of the Bible studies each morning at school. "Through the Bible lessons that I receive at school, I have learned that God is wonderful and he always watches over us," she says. The more Walquidea heard about this wonderful God, the more she began to trust Him—and the less she felt she had to fight to get what she needed.

Before Walquidea was in COTN's program, her mother struggled to provide for her
Before Walquidea was in the COTN child sponsorship program in the Dominican Republic, her mother struggled to provide food and education for her.

Now, staff at the school say Walquidea is always encouraging the other children to study hard and behave well. She tells them about Jesus and how much He has changed her life.

Walquidea is happy to be attending COTN’s school. Before she was in COTN's child sponsorship program, her mother couldn't afford to send her to school. Now, Walquidea is in seventh grade. She hopes to become a doctor, "to help the needy people," she says.
