Program Description:
Pueblo Nuevo is a community situated in the poorest part of the city of Barahona, where for years it has been forgotten by the government. Its population consists of more than 500 families of Dominican descent. There are few employment opportunities here, and the majority of youth dedicate themselves to various forms of delinquency: drugs, robbery, violence, etc. Access to electricity and water are limited. Before Children of the Nations came to provide assistance, the closest school was two miles away. In order to attend classes, the children had to walk, which was dangerous, and therefore few of them were able to go and learn. COTN began ministry in Pueblo Nuevo in 2006 with a focus on providing education in a safe environment. In 2007, our partners helped construct a vocational skills center to create solutions to the problem of delinquency by teaching job skills. Children from all our Village Partnership Programs in Barahona may attend classes at the center, where they can learn computer skills, baking, sewing, and more. Our partners and in-country staff also helped establish a preschool for the most vulnerable students in Pueblo Nuevo. By partnering with sponsors like you, we seek to provide the children of Pueblo Nuevo with the resources and care they need to become well-rounded individuals. By equipping these children and their caregivers with tools for success, they will grow up to create positive change in their community and ultimately their nation.
