Biography

Stella comes to our COTN family from the village of Mtsiliza, where she lives with her mother, one sister, and three brothers. Her family is supported through domestic work. Their house is made of mud walls with a thatched roof, and they live in very poor conditions. Stella helps her family at home by cleaning, sweeping, and carrying water. She speaks the traditional language of Chichewa with her family, but speaks English at school. Through your sponsorship, she has increased opportunities and hope for her future.

Program Description:
The village of Mtsiliza lies inside Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. It is home to more than 10,000 people, ranging from destitute to middle-class. Much of the population of Mtsiliza is made up of orphaned and destitute children living with families or caregivers who are unable to properly provide for them. Malnutrition, a lack of education, and a lack of medical care are common problems here. Due to the high rate of HIV/AIDS and the toll it has taken on this community, many families are headed by widows, the elderly, and in some cases, children. Christian, Muslim, and tribal religions all co-exist in Mtsiliza. Through the support of partners like you, COTN is able to provide children in Mtsiliza with an education, daily nutrition, and medical care. Partners like you are helping to build a secondary school at our nearby ministry center, and have provided much-needed resources like clothes, shoes, and blankets, as well as Christian discipleship training, HIV/AIDS education and testing, and trauma counseling. Mtsiliza is also home to the COTN Widows Program, where women can learn a trade and earn an income to better support their families. By partnering with sponsors like you, we seek to provide the children of Mtsiliza with the resources and care they need to become well-rounded individuals. By equipping these children and their caregivers with tools for success, they will grow up to create positive change in their community and ultimately their nation.
