7 Ways You Can Celebrate Book Lovers Day and Help Children Too

Happy Book Lovers Day! National Book Lovers Day is celebrated on both August 9th and the first Saturday of November. But at COTN, we love books all year around and want to raise up a new generation of book lovers in our children. Here are some ways you can celebrate your love of books and help us foster a passion for reading in others:

The Secret Thoughts of a COTN Volunteer

Four young women spent their summer volunteering with COTN–Dominican Republic on a college-immersion trip. Kristina, Kadyn, and Bekah spent eight weeks in the Dominican Republic, teaching summer school, helping at the clinic, assisting in medical trips, and living day-to-day life with the locals. A fourth student, Courtney, spent much of the summer stateside but traveled to the Dominican Republic for two weeks to join the others.

Thank you for joining the team of people who made summer camps possible for children in the Dominican Republic! The donations you and other sponsors gave through our Easter card fundraiser earlier this year provided the resources needed to make summer camps a special time for the children.

Bringing Dreams Back to the Dominican Republic—12 Trips with Ryan Church

“Anytime you are interacting with any level of abject poverty—poverty is really when you are robbed of your ability to dream,” says Ryan Church, former Senior Director of University Ministries at University Presbyterian Church (UPC) in Seattle and current interim Director of Outreach.

Ryan recently went on his 12th trip to the Dominican Republic with COTN. And he noticed a lot of differences between this Venture trip and his first visit.

How COTN Partners and Staff Solved a Water Crisis in the Dominican Republic

Two years ago, without any warning, water stopped coming out of the pipes in Don Bosco—an impoverished community in the Dominican Republic.

Under the hot afternoon sun, the injustice of this crisis was visceral. “Water is life,” says Vladi Feliz, a COTN translator.
